Leaving Your Job

IMPORTANT! If you have a job from CIEE, you cannot simply quit your job! Make sure you understand your commitment to your employer, and contact CIEE if you are having difficulties and would like to request a change.

Please note, if you plan to leave your job, it is customary to give 2 weeks written notice before your last day. This should benefit you in getting a recommendation letter from your employer as well as ensuring that you receive your final paycheck in a timely manner.

Before You Leave Your Job
In order to avoid any problems with your employer before you leave your job, follow these basic instructions:

  • Ask for your final paycheck and wages due to you BEFORE you leave.
  • If your employer has provided accommodation for you as part of your employment, ask your employer to return your security deposit BEFORE you leave.
  • Ask your employer what date you should expect to receive your last paycheck and how you will receive payment (paycheck, money order, bank transfer, etc.).
  • Keep your employer's name, mail address, telephone, fax number and email address in order to contact your employer in the U.S., in case of any problems.
  • Make sure your employer has your Social Security Number! If the employer doesn't you will need to contact him/her with this information when you get your card.

Layoffs and Firing

You could be laid off (lose your job because business is slow) for any number of reasons, which may not reflect on your performance in that job. Layoffs are often the result of financial issues within the company. You are usually given some kind of notice before this occurs.

If you are fired, it is because the company is unhappy with you. You will rarely be fired because of lack of job skills. Most often, people are fired for being consistently uncooperative, or for disciplinary reasons. If you are doing something wrong, you will usually be told so before the situation becomes serious. Contact CIEE about problem situations.

If you are laid off or fired, you MUST contact CIEE as soon as possible at 1-888-268-6245!
